Evening all
Lovely day today, still hot, but at least there was a breeze to cool things down a bit. Much more comfortable than yesterday, when there was no breeze and it felt really hot and sticky.
Anyway, today we started with the quarterly checks of the water systems, first aid boxes, ladders and also prepared for the three-hour trip. Erin and I carried out the water checks. This required us to change the particulate filters in both the Farm House and Driftwood, check the temperature of the water from both the hot and cold taps and run the outside taps at both buildings. We also needed to sweep the roof of the Fog Horn Cottage and Visitor toilets, clearing any debris and standing water from the flat roofs. There was quite a lot of standing water on the Fog Horn roof, as the drain had gotten blocked, so it took about half an hour to sweep the water away. The hot sun we had today will have dried up the little puddles that wouldn't sweep away!
After lunch, Simon and Jo took care of the three-hour trip, while Erin and I completed the monthly Vegetation Photography Survey. We needed to take panoramic shots of the vegetation at different locations on the island. These are kept on the computer and can give a visual record of what and where different plants present on the island are growing. This in turn helps with the management of the island Nature Reserve and helps to maintain suitable habitat for the animal and plant species who make their home here.
The last task of the day involved cutting up some more of the driftwood that is continually collected from West Beach. This resource helps keep the Warden (Matt) and a couple of volunteers warm in the winter. It can get very cold on the island and this year even saw a light dusting of snow! Though, if you came over to the island now it would be hard to think that it'll be getting so cold again. It's roasting at the moment!
Well, dinner is nearly ready so I'll be off. Standing By.
