Cleaning, meetings and visitors

Afternoon all
Had a day off today, so I was able to catch up on some sleep, as of late it has been rather hectic. Anyway, on with a catch up!
  • Saturday 4th July 2009
Yesterday started off with the Quarterly clean. This is a more thorough clean than both the weekly and monthly cleans, so it had been arranged for a time when we had as many staff on the island as possible! I had the joyous task of cleaning the cooker. That was a mission. The amount of grease and carbon that had built up in only a short time is scary, but it's all lovely and clean now! All the doors had to be cleaned, as well as all the windows, the kitchen and bins needed a deep clean. This wasn't just at the Farm House, Driftwood also needed the same treatment! Both buildings look sparkling now!
The next item after the clean was the monthly staff meeting. This wasn't as long as the last one. The staff that weren't present for the last meeting were brought up to date with the items from the last meeting and the two new volunteers were officially introduced. So welcome Nathan and Gosia! When we finished the meeting, we had lunch before the three-hour visit arrived.
The visit included families, for which activities had been arranged for the children, and some couples who could explore the island at their own pace. Jo and Simon looked after the activities, while I took care of manning the Barracks and shop.
As well as the family groups and other visitors, the boat brought over a group of volunteers who were going to attach identification rings onto the new generation of gulls hatched this year. After the three-hour visit had left, I cashed up the shop takings and the other staff members helped with the ringing. The evening finished off with a big BBQ with staff and the gull ringers. This was a lovely finish to the day and I was looking forward to my day off the next day!

I enjoyed my lay-in this morning, a very welcome rest. We said good-bye to the gull ringers today when the three-hour visitors arrived. And now Alex and Gosia are taking care of the three-hour visitors, who'll be leaving at high tide, while Jo, Simon and Sam are carrying out some conservation activities. Anyway, I'm off to read my book in the sunshine. Standing By.
