Surveys, duties and visitors

Hi there
I'm back on the island after my shore leave. I'm sorry I didn't post anything yesterday, but I was really tired, as I'd gotten up at 05:30 to be able to get to Cardiff and catch the boat over. I slept very well last night and managed to get up early today to complete the daily duties. Anyway a quick catch up I think:
  • Saturday 18th - Wednesday 29th July2009 SHORE LEAVE
  • Thursday 30th July 2009
An early start as mentioned above, to catch the early morning boat at 09:45. My mum had booked to come over to see the island, so I spent the three hours trip time showing her where I'm staying and introducing her to my work colleagues. She though the island was beautiful and my work colleagues very nice!
Once I'd said cheery-oh to my mum and the other visitors, we all had lunch. The island is very full at the moment, 17 people are currently staying here. As well as the three paid staff and the vols (including myself), there are 6 international volunteers from across Europe, two work experience boys and Erin has come back for some more volunteering! So there was a lot of activities going on yesterday!
While the International volunteers and work experience boys were being show around the island, Erin, Gosia and I carried out to of the regular surveys we undertake on the island. These were the weekly Shelduck survey and the monthly Vegetation Photography survey. We didn't see any Shelduck, as their breeding season is nearly finished, but we need to keep monitoring a little longer just to make sure we don't miss any last minute pairs. The vegetation survey is much more pleasant to do now as your not getting white-washed as we did earlier in the gull breeding season. There are even fewer gulls left now and any juveniles are pretty much able to fend for themselves now. But they still like to act like little chicks, begging for a free and easy meal brought to them by their parents!

Lots of things happening today, with a number of activities being carried out by different work groups. The international volunteers, supervised by Sam and Jo, started on their project to clear and landscape the pond area. Lots of moving of dirt and mud, so they will all sleep well tonight!
The work experience boys worked with Simon and Erin clearing vegetation from around the Hospital Stores buildings and Gosia and I tided the Farm House and prepped for the three-hour trip. We then manned the Barracks while the others carried on with their tasks. The three-hour trip was here during lunch time, so after it had gone, Gosia and I were able to have our lunch! Then there was just enough time to tidy the Barracks and cash up before the end of the working day. Everyone is tired after the days activities, so we are all relaxing now. Well, until tomorrow, Standing By.
